Walk through a preserved section of the 800-meter tunnel beneath the airport runway, view documentary footage, and hear stories from the family who housed the tunnel entrance. The experience provides profound understanding of daily life during the longest siege in modern warfare. The surrounding area still shows war damage, making the visit powerfully educational.

Practical Information

Getting Around

Sarajevo's Old Town is highly walkable, and most Day 1 attractions are within a 20-minute walk of each other. For Day 2's Tunnel of Salvation, taxis are most convenient (agree on price beforehand, approximately $10-15 each way). The city has trams and buses, but for a weekend visit, walking and occasional taxis work best. From the airport, taxi or prearranged transfer to your accommodation costs approximately $10-15. Wear comfortable walking shoes as streets are cobblestoned and hilly.

Book Ahead

No advance bookings are essential for a weekend visit. The War Childhood Museum is small but rarely has long waits. Accommodation should be booked ahead, especially during summer months and festival periods.

Packing Essentials

Comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones and hills, modest clothing for mosque visits (scarves provided at mosques), layers for variable weather, power adapter (European two-pin), and small bills in convertible marks (KM) as many small vendors don't accept cards

Total Budget

$115-160 for two days (excluding accommodation and flights)

Customize Your Trip

Budget Version

Stay in hostels in Baščaršija ($10-15 per night), eat exclusively at local bakeries and ćevapi stands ($3-5 per meal), walk everywhere including to the Tunnel Museum (possible but takes 90 minutes), skip paid museums except the War Childhood Museum, and enjoy free attractions like Yellow Fortress, Baščaršija wandering, and viewpoints. Bring a water bottle to refill. Total daily budget can drop to $30-40.

Luxury Upgrade

Stay at a boutique hotel in a restored Ottoman or Austro-Hungarian building with spa facilities. Arrange private guided tours with local historians who lived through the siege. Dine at upscale restaurants offering contemporary Bosnian fusion cuisine with wine pairings. Book a private car and driver for Day 2. Add a day trip to Skakavac Waterfall with a nature guide. Consider a traditional hammam experience. Budget $200-300 per day.

Family-Friendly

The War Childhood Museum is actually excellent for older children (10+) as it presents history through relatable stories. Skip the Tunnel Museum for young children as it can be emotionally heavy. Instead, spend more time at Bosna Spring where kids can run freely, or visit Park Safet Zajko. Take breaks at cafes with outdoor seating. Consider a ride on the cable car if operational. Focus on the bazaar's crafts and sweets, which fascinate children.
