Your complete guide to getting around Sarajevo - from airport transfers to local transport

Getting Around Sarajevo

Sarajevo's core is walkable. But when the hills start to bite you'll lean on the tram, trolleybus and city bus network that radiates from the central Bascomaršala Tita strip. Buy a rechargeable smart card at any kiosk marked "GRAS", it works on all three and spares you the exact-change scramble. Trams are quickest for east-west runs; buses fill the gaps up the valley sides. Taxis are plentiful and cheap compared with western Europe. But insist on the meter: the "fixed-price" touts outside hotels are a reliable rip-off. From the airport, the public trolleybus stop is a five-minute walk from arrivals and costs a fraction of a taxi, though it meanders through suburban streets. If you're loaded with bags or arriving late, the official taxi rank is just outside the terminal. Agree the metered fare before you get in and avoid the unmarked cars that circle the curb.

Quick Transportation Tips

Grab a 1-, 3- or 7-day GRAS card at any kiosk stamped GRAS. It unlocks every tram, trolleybus and city bus in Sarajevo. Swipe once. Ride everywhere. No extra fares.

Tram 3 rockets from Baščaršija to Ilidžan in one straight shot. It is the fastest cross-city line. Trams roll every 5, 7 minutes. Board anywhere.

Catch the red Centrotrans airport shuttle at the main bus station. It costs roughly half a taxi fare. Buses leave hourly. Simple math.

Install Moovit before you leave the hotel. The app shows live tram and bus departures in English. It also maps the quickest route. Done.
